Painted Desert Inn - Petrified Forest National Monument, Arizona
The Painted Desert Inn was first opened about 1920 and was purchased in 1935 by the National Park Service. After extensive remodeling, the inn reopened in 1940 under the management of the Fred Harvey Company, which was famous in the Southwest for providing hospitality services to tourists and travelers on the Santa Fe Railroad. The inn closed in 1963 and was scheduled for demolition in 1975 but was saved by a successful public campaign to save the hotel. The Painted Desert Inn reopened in 2006 as a museum following its restoration. The inn now appears as it would have in 1949.
The Big Well - Greensburg, Kansas
The Big Well Museum was destroyed the tornado that devastated Greensburg, Kansas, on May 4, 2007. All that was left was the well itself. Construction began in September 2011 on the new museum and it opened May 26, 2012. Visitors are once again able to take tours into The Big Well.
Sanlando Springs - Longwood, Florida
Sanlando Springs was a privately owned and operated recreation area that was open to the public from the 1930's until 1971, when the property was sold for conversion into a private residential development known as The Springs, a gated community.
